About the Somali community in Malaysia
Our Background and History
The Society of Somali Community in Malaysia (SSCM) was established in 2013 in response to the growing needs of the Somali community living in Malaysia. At that time, many Somali families were facing serious challenges related to education access, welfare support, legal protection, women’s wellbeing, and community coordination. SSCM was created as a community umbrella organization to provide structure, representation, and support for Somalis in Malaysia, while maintaining respect for Malaysian laws, institutions, and social harmony.
Our Purpose
SSCM exists to:
1. Support the welfare and dignity of the Somali community
2. Promote education, skills development, and youth empowerment
3. Protect and uplift women and vulnerable groups
4. Provide community coordination and representation
5. Build partnerships with Malaysian government agencies, NGOs, UNHCR, and charitable institutions
6. Strengthen unity and social responsibility within the Somali community
Mission
To serve and represent the Somali community in Malaysia through inclusive, transparent, and lawful initiatives that promote social welfare, education, leadership development, cultural preservation, and community empowerment.
Vision
To be a trusted, unified, and professional community organization that represents and supports the Somali community in Malaysia, while contributing positively to Malaysian society.
Our Legal Framework
Under the Malaysian Societies Act 1966, SOSOMCMY is recognised as an official body authorised to:
- Represent the Somali community in Malaysia
- Liaise with Malaysian government agencies and institutions
- Organise lawful community, educational, cultural, and humanitarian programs
- Coordinate community structures and initiatives
- Engage with local and international partners within the legal framework
Only registered societies are legally permitted to perform these functions, making SOSOMCMY a legitimate and accountable representative body for the Somali diaspora.
